a recurring plot, character type, setting, or symbol that appears in stories from cultures around the world and symbolizes something universal in the human experience.

examples:

archetypal plot: "The Hero's Journey" (and its subplots)
--archetypal character: the mentor, the trickster, the tempter/temptress
--archetypal setting: the underworld, valleys, mountaintops, rivers/oceans
--archetypal symbols: water (i.e. river-crossings, floods, cleansings), fire, wind, trees
