archetype
a recurring plot, character type, setting, or symbol that appears in stories from cultures around the world and symbolizes something universal in the human experience.
examples:
archetypal plot: "The Hero's Journey" (and its subplots)
--archetypal character: the mentor, the trickster, the tempter/temptress
--archetypal setting: the underworld, valleys, mountaintops, rivers/oceans
--archetypal symbols: water (i.e. river-crossings, floods, cleansings), fire, wind, trees
genre
a category of literature identified by form, content, and style. For example: poetry, drama, short story, the novel.
epic
a long narrative poem in elevated style recounting the deeds of a legendary or historical hero(the odyssey)
myth
a classic or legendary story that usually focuses on a particular hero or event and explains mysteries of nature, existence, or the universe. (creations stories)
nonfiction
a broad genre of texts dealing with facts/real events
historical nonfiction
True accounts of historical eras and events. Some histories dwell purely in objective facts; other histories are refracted through the lens of the authorās personal beliefs.
Biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs
Focus on the life story of a particular subject. Biographies are written in the third person about someone other than the author. Autobiographies and memoirs are written by the subject.
