Why does depression jump in adolescence?
Biological: Hormonal changes and brain development lead to more intense emotional responses.
Psychological: Adolescents face identity confusion, self-consciousness, and increased rumination.
Social: Peer pressure, social comparisons, academic and family pressures contribute to stress and feelings of inadequacy.
What is the difference between emotion and problem centered coping? When is each appropriate? Not appropriate?
Emotion-Centered Coping:
Focuses on managing emotions associated with a stressful situation
Appropriate when the problem cannot be changed
Not appropriate if the problem can be solved or changed
Problem-Centered Coping:
Focuses on addressing and solving the problem directly
Appropriate when the problem is solvable and action can be taken
Not appropriate if the problem is beyond control or cannot be fixed
