The Nurse-Client Relationship Phase

  • What is pre-orientation phase

  • What is orientation phase

  • What is working phase

  • What is termination phase

  • Can be considered the “preperation phase”. This is when patient information is gathered such as medical hx, medications, current illness.

  • Can be considered the “introduction phase”. This is when the nurse and client meet and rapport should be established. Boundaries are established and confidentiality is explained.

  • Seen as “problem-solving”, this is when the nurse attempts to identify problems, explore solutions, and monitor progress.

  • The “conclusion” in which goals are achieved and discharge plans are brought up.

What is Motivational Interviewing?

  • Meant to help patients who experience conflicting feelings or beliefs and improve their motivation for change. OARS is often used.

  • Open-ended questions - Encourage patient to express their feelings without a simple “yes” or “no”.

  • Affirmations - Declare what strengths and skills the patient has. More like reinforcing.

  • Reflective listening - Therapeutic commuication of reflection is useful here.

  • Summarizing the conversation towards the end of MI.

What is behavioral therapy

  • Goal of this therapy is to reduce maladaptive behaviour.

  • Postive reinformcent to increase a certain behavior and negative reinforcment to decrease a behavior.

Mileu therapy

  • A “therapeutic community” where patients can learn to cope with stressors, improve social skills, and develop autonomy. Seen as a safe environment.

  • Nurses and other staff members are usually included as apart of this therapy.

Group therapy

  • A group setting similair to mileu therapy, but involves only the patients and the therapist, not the “whole” environment is involved. The therapist is the guide so “freedom” is not as high as mileu therapy.

  • Goal is for patients to develop new skills such as altruism and instilling better coping skills.

Biofeedback

  • Similair to guided imagery, uses a machine however to measure VS and the individual can focus on the machine to see the before and after effects during coping.

  • Mental images are used to reduce anxiety and stress. A mind-body intervention.
