Base peak → the highest peak show on the graph

M + peak → molecular ion peak , the peak show us the Mr of the ion

Eg : ethanol CH3 CH2 OH what is the M + peak ?

CH3 CH2 OH + e - → CH3 CH2 OH+ + 2e-

CH3 CH2 OH + → M+ peak : 46

What is the definition of fragmentation ?

The process in which a molecular ion breaks into smaller ions, radicals, and/or neutral molecules.

These fragmented ion are accelerated by an electric field based on their mass to charge ratio , the ion fragments are then separated y deflecting them into the detector.
