Role of hormones in human reproduction

FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone)

causes egg/sperm to mature

LH (Lutenizing hormone)

cause mature follicle to burst and release into ovary

Oestrogen

produced by a developing follicle or corpus luteum to thicken the endometrium

Progestorone

maintains endometrium and causes bleeding to start when levels drop

HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadatropin)

Released by the embryo after implantation to stop the corpus luteum from breaking down so it can continue producing oestrogen and progestorone to maintain pregnancy

Oxytocin

Stimulates contractions and releases stored milk

Prolactin

Enlarges mammary gland and stimulates milk production

Relaxin

Relaxes the muscles for birth but won’t be released prior to birth to prevent a premature birth
