Mania
Characterized by a period of feeling overly happy or outgoing, extreme irritability, agitation, racing thoughts, impulsive behavior, and little sleep.
Hypomania
A milder form of mania that affects sleep and activity but usually does not require hospitalization.
Depression
Long-term feeling of emptiness or worry; includes loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, fatigue, and problems with concentration.
Mild Depression
Fewer symptoms than severe depression, less impact on daily life.
Severe Depression
Involves more symptoms and has a significant impact on daily life.
Bipolar I
Characterized by at least one manic episode lasting at least 7 days, often accompanied by depressive episodes.
Bipolar II
Involves a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes without full-blown manic episodes.
Schizoaffective Disorder
Includes psychotic symptoms and is better tolerated by families; involves a more constant state.
Bipolar Disorder
Characterized by increases in white matter associated with severity, alongside psychotic symptoms.
Altman Self Rating Scale
A questionnaire used to assess the presence and severity of manic symptoms through self-report.
Symptoms of Mania
Increased self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, talkativeness, racing thoughts, increased distractibility.
Goal-Directed Activities
Involves an increase in the desire to accomplish tasks and follow through on ideas during manic states.
Enlarged Ventricles
A similarity found in both schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder.
Flight of Ideas
A symptom of mania, characterized by a sensation of racing thoughts and often crazy ideas.
Manic Episode
A period involving symptoms of mania that lasts at least one week.
Depressive Episode
A period characterized by symptoms of depression lasting at least two weeks.
Mixed Episode
A condition where symptoms of both mania and depression are present simultaneously.
Psychotic Symptoms
Involves delusions or hallucinations that can occur in severe cases of bipolar disorder.
Mood Stabilizers
Medications used to treat and stabilize mood disorders, particularly bipolar disorder.
Emotional Dysregulation
Difficulty in managing emotional responses, often seen in individuals with bipolar disorder.It can lead to intense mood swings and impulsive behavior, impacting daily functioning.
