Alliteration
Repetition of the same beginning consonant sounds in nearby words.
Polysyndeton
Using many conjunctions close together.
Rhetorical Question
A question asked for effect, not meant to be answered.
Anaphora
Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of clauses/sentences.
Colloquialism
slang and Informal language used in conversation.
Allusion
A reference to something well-known
Paradox
A statement that seems contradictory but actually reveals a truth.
Antithesis
Putting opposite ideas side by side for contrast.
Connotation
The emotional or cultural meaning attached to a word (not the literal meaning)
Motif
A repeated idea, symbol, or theme in a work.
Satire
Using humor or exaggeration to criticize society or people.
Tone
The author’s attitude toward the subject
Metonymy (Metonym):
Replacing something with a word closely related to it.
→ “The White House announced…” (meaning the president or administration)
