Health Status Measures
Indices used to identify the health status of populations.
Crude Birth Rate
The number of live births in a time period per 1,000 population from which births occurred.
Fertility Rate
The number of live births in a time period per 1,000 women ages 15-44 years.
Mortality
The rate of death widely used in epidemiology and vital statistics.
Vital Statistics
Systematic information concerning births, deaths, marriages, and divorces.
Death Certificate
A document including information like date of birth, cause of death, and place of residence.
Crude Mortality Rate
Total number of deaths in a time period per 100,000 population from which deaths occurred.
Infant Mortality Rate
Infant deaths under one year of age per 1,000 live births in a year.
Neonatal Mortality Rate
Infant deaths less than 28 days in a time period per 1,000 live births.
Maternal Mortality Rate
Number of maternal deaths due to childbirth per 100,000 live births.
Proportionate Mortality Ratio (PMR)
The percent of deaths due to a specific cause in relation to total deaths in a specified time period.
Case Fatality Rate
The number of deaths from a specific disease divided by the number of diagnosed cases of that disease.
Years of Potential Life Lost (YPLL)
A measure quantifying early deaths or premature mortality; indicates the value of human life.
