Motivation
A need, behavior, instinct, or desire that energizes and directs behavior.
Drive-Reduction Theory
The idea that psychological needs create an aroused tension state (a drive) that motivates an organism to satisfy the need.
Homeostasis
The tendency to maintain a balanced or constant internal state; the regulation of any aspect such as body chemistry.
Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow's pyramid of human needs, starting with physiological needs, then safety needs, and finally psychological needs.
Aset Point
The point at which an individual's body weight thermostat is set, affecting hunger and metabolism.
Basal Metabolic Rate
The body's resting rate of energy expenditure.
Sexual Response Cycle
The four stages of sexual responding: excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution.
Sexual Dysfunctions
A problem that consistently impairs sexual arousal or functioning, which can be treated by therapy or drugs.
Push Factors
Internal drives like hunger and thirst that motivate behavior.

External incentives like rewards that motivate behavior.
