Health Care Team
All employees in a corporation or collaboration working together to give clients the best quality of health care.
Certification
A credentialing process, often voluntary, where a professional organization assesses an applicant's knowledge and skills against minimum standards.
Registration
Another form of credentialing.
Licensure
The strongest form of regulation, requiring an exam, fees, and proof of meeting minimum standards set by law and the state.
Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Required for renewal of certifications, registrations, and licenses, involving fees and proof of completed educational units within a specific timeframe.
Certified Medical Administrative Specialist (CMAS)
A professional who tends to work in the front office, familiar with clinical and technical concepts.
KHEP
An organization with over 600 programs that works in conjunction with AMA. Only graduates of a KHEP program, medical assisting program, can sit for the national certification exam.
AAMA
American Association. Allows individuals to take the national certification exam and become a CMA.
ABHES
An organization with 29 programs whose graduates go through AMT and can take the national certification exam to become an RMA or CMAS.
Medical Coder
Responsible for the correct application of procedures, supplies, and diagnostic codes used for billing professional medical services, certified by AAPC and AHIMA.
Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
Employed in labs to prepare specimens and operate automated analyzers.
Medical Technologists (MTs)
Work in clinical pathology labs, running blood and tissue testing, and analyzing biological samples.
Endorsement/Reciprocity
When one state recognizes the licensing procedure of another, considering it valid and granting a license to practice based on that licensure.
Scope of Practice
Procedures, actions, and processes permitted for a profession based on experience, education, and competency, varying by state and profession.
Medical Practice Acts
State laws written to govern the practice of medicine, delineating the scope of practice for health care professionals.
