4 types of sculpture
carving, casting, modeling, assembling
armature
a skeletal framework built as a support on which a clay, wax, plaster, or paper is added
assemblage
the counterpart of a collage, assemblage involves the transformation on non-art objects and materials into sculpture through combining techniques such as gluing and welding
bisque ware
unglazed, fired clay that has become ceramic
composition
the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art
fat clay
highly plastic clay or clay at its most workable stage
shape vs. form
shape- a flat, enclosed area that has 2 dimensions, viewed from one side
form- describes objects that are 3 dimensional, having length, width, and depth; viewed from multiple sides
glaze
layer of glass that is fused onto pottery
reasons to use- hygienic, decoration, increase in strength
greenware
any unified clay sculpture, can be leatherhard or bone dry
kiln
the device in which pottery is fired
kiln controller
digital or computerized unit that can store firing programs and give you more control over firings; can use “easy fire” or make your own custom programs
kiln firings: bisque
first firing- bone dry greenware goes in, can be nested or stacked, can touch
temp- cone 04-06 (low fire)
most fragile pieces go in the top shelf
kiln firings: glaze
glaze/second firing- bisqued and glazed pieces
cannot touch

every piece is placed on top of cookies or prongs
kiln furniture
props/posts- hold up shelves
prongs- used when glaze has been applied to entire piece
cookies- disks or sections of bisqued clay pieces used to protect the shelves fucking a glaze firing
papier mâché
french for “chewed paper”
substance made of paper mixed with glue or layers of paper glued and pressed together
plasticity
property of a material, enabling it to be shaped and hold its shape
refractory
ceramic materials that are resistant to high temperatures
short clay
clay that is non-plastic or poor in working qualities, breaks/cracks easily
surrealism
cultural and creative movement that mixes aspects of the subconscious, dreams, and irrational to create a new world that differs from reality
