Epidermal Tissue System
Composed of closely packed cells, that are mostly single-layered for providing protective covering to root, stem, and leaves.
Epidermis
A dermal tissue that forms the covering of young parts of root, stem, and leaves.
Stomata
Pores on the epidermis of leaves and young stems used for the exchange of gases as well as for transpiration.
Cuticle
A waxy coating secreted by the epidermis in leaves that prevents the plant from drying out.
Root hairs
Unicellular structures of the root epidermis responsible for the absorption of water and minerals from the soil.
Vascular Tissue System
Tissues made of a group of cells that form tubes for conducting water, minerals, and food across the plant body.
Ground Tissue System
The bulk of the plant responsible for providing mechanical support, synthesizing food, and acting as food storage tissues.
Simple Permanent Tissues
Tissues made up of one type of cells that are more or less similar in structure and function, including parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.
Parenchyma
Living cells that are thin-walled and spherical or oval, having a large vacuole and prominent nucleus; their main function is to synthesize and store food.
Intercellular spaces
The spaces found between cells in parenchyma tissue.
Mesophyll
Ground tissue in the internal structure of a leaf, also referred to as chlorenchyma.
