Plant Tissue Systems
Plant tissue systems consist of groups of tissues working together as a functional unit to support the life of the plant.
The plant body is categorized into three primary tissue systems:
The epidermal tissue system.
The ground tissue system.
The vascular tissue system.
The Epidermal Tissue System
Composition and Structure:
Epidermal tissues are comprised of closely packed cells.
These cells are typically organized into a single layer.
Function and Distribution:
Provides a protective covering to the roots, stems, and leaves.
Epidermis: This dermal tissue forms the specific covering for the young parts of roots, stems, and leaves.
Specialized Features and Structures:
Stomata (plural: stoma): Pores found on the epidermis of leaves and young stems. Their primary functions are the exchange of gases and the regulation of transpiration.
Cuticle: A waxy coating secreted by the epidermis of leaves. It acts as a protective barrier to prevent the leaf from drying out by reducing water loss.
Root Hairs: Found on the root epidermis; these are unicellular structures specialized for the absorption of water and minerals from the soil.
Internal Anatomy of a Leaf:
The structure of a leaf identifies the following layers: Cuticle, Upper epidermis, Mesophyll (specifically chlorenchyma), Stoma, and Lower epidermis.
The Ground Tissue System
Overview:
The ground tissue system constitutes the bulk of the plant body.
It is composed of simple tissues.
Key Functions:
Providing mechanical support to the plant structure.
Synthesizing food (photosynthesis).
Acting as storage tissues for food within the plant.
The Vascular Tissue System
Composition:
Vascular tissues are made of complex tissues, which are groups of cells forming tube-like structures.
Function:
Conducting water, minerals, and food throughout the entire plant body.
Simple Permanent Tissues
Definition:
Simple permanent tissues are composed of a single type of cell.
The cells within these tissues are more or less similar in both structure and function.
Classification: There are three distinct types of simple permanent tissues:
Parenchyma
Collenchyma
Sclerenchyma
Parenchyma
Cellular Characteristics:
Parenchyma is made of living cells.
The cells are thin-walled.
Shape: Usually spherical or oval.
Cytoplasmic Organization: Each cell contains a large central vacuole and a prominent nucleus located along the margin of the cell.
Intercellular Spaces: There are distinct intercellular spaces found between the individual parenchyma cells.

Chloroplast
Cell wall
Cell membrane
Nucleus
Large vacuole
Intercellular space
Distribution:
Parenchyma is widely distributed throughout various plant organs, specifically the roots, stems, and leaves.
Primary Functions:
Synthesis of food.
Storage of food products.
