Where does the link reaction occur?
Once pyruvate is in the mitochondrion, it undergoes a link reaction in the matrix
What happens to the pyruvate?
First decarboxylated then dehydrogenated. CO2 produced is an excretory product and diffuses out of the cell. Hydrogen picked up by 2 NAD molecules to form NADH
What does the pyruvate then combine with?
Coenzyme A
What is a coenzyme?
Biological molecule that helps enzymes carry out reduction or oxidation reactions
What does coenzyme A consist of?
Adenosine, ribose, pantothenic acid (a type of B vitamin)
What does coenzyme A do?
Transfers a acetyl group (2C) from pyruvate into the Krebs cycle
What is the reaction between pyruvate and coenzyme A?
