1: Unorganized territory (the Federal gov had to claim the land and responsibility and the treasury and war departments are in charge of juresdiction)

2: Organized territory (there were boundaries to the territory but they were not officially a state)

3: Self-government/Organized Statehood (the state is made official and a constitution must be formed)

Who is William Seward?

He was involved in the purchasing of Alaska in 1867

Why was the purchasing of Alaska a good deal?

We bought it for only 3 million and it had minerals underneath it which made the Canadians nervous because Alaska was not attatched

What was happening in Cuba?

There was a full scale war between Spain and Cuba and Spain was basically hurting the Cubans

What is the Yellow Press and why was it important?

Press shapes opinions (they started mass producing newspapers), it was important because Cuba wanted America's help but they needed something exciting (sexy) to make headlines

What is a Reconcentrado?

Concentration camps set up by the Spanish government- press on these was what caused the US to intervene in the war

The man sent to Cuba to see if what was being publicized about Cuba was true or not

What was the Battleship Maine?

A battleship sent to Cuba to look after American interests but mysteriously exploded in the Cuban Harbor- this was an important even because it made Americans be fully invested in war against Spain

a cavalry regiment organized by Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish American war- they wanted to fight Cuba and would do anything to become more manly

What happened at Santiago de Cuba?

The US conquered Cuba in 100 days with not a single casualty and thougsands of Spanish causalties

What was the Philippine Insurrection?

armed conflict between the First Philippine Republic and the US- we created reconcentrados for the filipinos- there was debated about annexation and Ben Tillman and the South opposed annexation

Why did the Republican party want annexation?

because they saw it as a gateway to China to sell American products
