from note 4.1, with the following glossary terms: Free fall, Terminal speed, Force field, Gravitational field strength, Weight vs. Mass, Elevator Problems
Free fall
the motion of a falling object where the only force acting on the object is gravity
Terminal speed
the maximum constant speed of a falling object
Force field
a region of space surrounding an object that can exert a force on other objects that are placed within that region and are able to interact with that force
Gravitational field strength
the force per unit mass acting on an object when placed in a gravitational field
Weight vs Mass
Mass: quantity of matter, mass can only change if you add or remove matter.
Weight: the measure of the force of gravity Fg . weight can only change depending on the location and magnitude of earth’s gravitational field strength.
Elevator Problems
1) Write down your givens and requires, and set up a FBD. specify which direction is positive. remember that “weight” is force of gravity. and “feel” is normal force.
2) put down the first few lines F = ma, and F = sum of all forces. rearrange for what your trying to find.
*** When Objects are at rest or constant velocity, the normal and gravity force magnitude is the same, but the direction is different ***
