Alimony
Financial support provided to a spouse after separation or divorce.
Permanent Alimony
Alimony that is paid indefinitely until the recipient remarries or the payer dies.
Opportunity Cost
The loss of potential gain from other alternatives when one alternative is chosen.
Change in Circumstances
A significant change in situation that may warrant a modification of alimony.
Rehabilitation Support
Temporary support given to a spouse until they can become self-sufficient through education or job training.

Intangible Property
Non-physical assets such as stocks, bonds, and intellectual property.
Transmutation
The process where separate property becomes marital property or vice versa.
Valuation
The process of determining the current worth of an asset.
Fair Market Value
The price that property would sell for on the open market.
Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO)
A legal order in a divorce that recognizes joint marital ownership of retirement plan assets.
Subject Matter Jurisdiction
The authority of a court to hear cases of a particular type.
Personal Jurisdiction
The power of a court to require a party to appear before it.
Domicile
The country or state a person treats as their permanent home.
Minimum Contact
The legal standard for determining whether a court can exercise personal jurisdiction over a defendant.
Long Arm Statute
A statute that allows a court to reach beyond its geographical boundaries for jurisdiction.
