Tuckman’s Five Stages of Team Development
A model describing how teams evolve: Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning.
Forming
Initial stage where the team is created, members meet, and there is little conflict or communication.
Storming
Stage marked by conflict as team members express differing ideas and challenge one another.
Norming
Stage where conflicts subside, and the team reaches consensus on processes and goals.
Performing
Stage in which the team works efficiently toward deliverables with minimal conflict.
Adjourning
Final stage where the project ends, deliverables are complete, and the team disbands or is reassigned.
Adaptive Leadership
Adjusting leadership style to match the team’s maturity and development stage.
Directing Leadership
Leadership style used in Forming; provides clear guidance on scope and tasks.
Coaching Leadership
Style applied during Storming; supports and guides constructive disagreement without suppressing it.
Supporting Leadership
Style used in Norming; the leader acts as a servant, encouraging consensus and collaboration.
Delegating Leadership
Leadership style for Performing; work is handed over to the team while the leader oversees progress.
Constructive Disagreement
Healthy conflict in which differing ideas are debated to reach better solutions, typical of Storming.
Servant Leader
A leader who prioritizes team needs, removes impediments, and supports members, especially in Norming.
