Autotrophic
Organisms that make their own food.
Plant metabolism
Reactions such as photosynthesis & respiration, and to reactions that occur in other processes such as cell division, growth & reproduction.
Root hairs
Extensions of root epidermis cells with thin walls not covered by a cuticle.
Osmosis
Absorption of water into root hairs.
Capillary water
Relatively pure water surrounding soil particles.
Root Pressure
Pressure from water drawn into roots by osmosis, pushing water up through the xylem.
Stomata
Openings on the underside of the leaf where most transpiration occurs.
Transpiration stream
The flow of water through a plant.
Cuticle
Waxy layer on leaves that prevents water loss.
Guard cells
Cells that surround the stomata and control their opening and closing.
Active transport
Process by which minerals are absorbed into roots using energy.
Ground tissue cells
Leaf tissue containing chloroplasts for photosynthesis.
Cohesion-Tension model+ Names
Model explaining how water is transported in plants to extreme heights against gravity.Dixen and Jolly
Cohesion
Sticking of similar molecules to each other.
Adhesion
Occurs when different molecules stick together.
