what is the aim
measure the frequency, wavelength and speed of the wave using a ripple tank
what happens in stage 1
set up apparatus, depth of water should be 5cm
what happens at stage 2
adjust height of wooden rod, this should touch the surface of water
what happens during stage 3
switch lamp and motor on adjust it for low frequency waves observed
what happens at stage 4
measure length on number of waves and divide by number of waves to record wavelength. using photograph is easier but make sure to measure with ruler and take measurements
what happens at stage 5
count number of waves passing through a point in 10 seconds and divide this by 10
what happens in step 6
calculate speed of wave using equation wave speed = frequency x wavelength
what are some hazards of the experiment?
electrical components near water
what are some consequences of this?
damage and shock to components
what are some control measure that can be put in place to ensure safety?
secure electrical components before adding water taking care not to splash
