Body Cavities
Compartments in the human body that house and protect internal organs.
Transverse Plane
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior (above) and inferior (below) portions.
Sagittal Plane
A vertical plane that separates the body into left and right portions.
Coronal Plane
Also known as the frontal plane; separates the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.
Ventral Cavity
Contains the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.
Dorsal Cavity
Contains the cranial and vertebral cavities.
Abdominopelvic Quadrants
Divided into four quadrants: RUQ, LUQ, RLQ, LLQ.
Pleurae
Double-layered serous membrane surrounding the lungs.
Pericardial Cavity
Cavity that surrounds the heart.
Umbilical Region
Located at the center of the abdomen surrounding the umbilicus.
Epi- (prefix)
Means 'above'.
Hypo- (prefix)
Means 'below'.
Appendicitis
Inflammation of the appendix, often presenting with RLQ pain.
Diverticulitis
Condition involving pouch-like herniations in the colon, commonly affecting LLQ.

An imaginary flat surface that separates organs or structures.

The portion or slice of the body formed by cutting along a plane.

Mediastinum
The central compartment of the thoracic cavity which contains the heart and major vessels.

Contains the stomach, intestines, spleen, and liver.
Pelvic Cavity
Contains urinary bladder, reproductive organs, and rectum.
