What do Venn Diagrams symbolise?

Venn Diagrams symbolise two different sets that overlap each other.

2

What does the symbol ‘U’ mean when relating to sets and Venn Diagrams?

It means ‘Union’ - those sets which combine both together. For example, if A = 1, 2, 3 and B = 4, 5, 6, then A U B = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

3
New cards

What does the ‘∩’ symbol mean?

It means those elements that are common to both sets. For example, if A = 1, 2, 3 and B = 2, 3, 4, then A ∩ B = 2, 3.

4
New cards

What does the ‘ξ’ symbol mean?

It means ‘universal’, symbolising the set that contains all those digits. The set also contains any A, B or whatever smaller sets there are.

5

What is the overlap in two circles in a Venn Diagram? (e.g. A and B)

It symbolises the set of both A and B, representing the shared elements between the two sets.

6
New cards

What is the space outside both circles?

It represents those elements which are in neither set

7
New cards

What does the apostrophe (‘) in A’ mean?

It means ‘Not A’, or simply those digits that are not within the set A.

Let’s do some questions.
