Archaea
A domain of single-celled microorganisms that are distinct from bacteria and eukarya, often found in extreme environments.
Prokaryote
An organism whose cells lack a nucleus; includes Archaea and Bacteria.
Eukaryote
An organism whose cells contain a nucleus and organelles, including animals, plants, fungi, and protists.
Cell membrane
A lipid bilayer that regulates what enters and leaves the cell.
Ribosome
A molecular machine consisting of RNA and proteins that is the site of protein synthesis.
Chromosome
A DNA molecule, either circular or linear, associated with proteins that bind to the DNA.
Cytoskeleton
A network of rod-like proteins in cells that provide structural support and facilitate movement.
Flagellum
A long, whip-like structure that propels the cell through water.
Cell wall
A rigid structure outside the cell membrane, composed of carbohydrates and other molecules.
Organelle
A membrane-bound compartment inside a cell that carries out specific functions.
