Environment facilitative strategies
constructive strategies - get closer, go somewhere quieter, improve lighting
Talker facilitative strategies
instructive strategies - look at me, don't cover your face, slow down, talk louder
Message facilitative strategies
message tailoring strategies - use simpler language, use fewer words, less rich imagery, open vs closed questions
Listener facilitative strategies
adaptive/anticipatory strategies - arrive early, read ahead, assistive devices//think positive, remain calm, use coping strategies
When do we employ repair strategies?
strategies used after communication breakdown occurs
2 categories of repair strategies
1. specific
2. non specific
Specific repair strategies
tell the communication partner exactly what can be fixed - repeat message, indicate topic, elaborate, write it down
Nonspecific repair strategies
quick and easy ways to repair conversation - huh? what? pardon?
Maladaptive strategies
responses to communication difficulties that do not address the problems
Examples of maladaptive strategies
1. bluffing
2. blaming something else
3. withdrawal
4. aggression (rude, so they don't talk to you)
5. dominating conversation (so they know what the topic is)

let the patient talk about why they're here, what their goals are, what difficulties they experience
why do clinicians do more of one type?
clinicians tend to do more informational counseling because it is uncomfortable bc of lack of training/experience
