Winnipeg general strike
took place in May 1919. Winnipeg's metal and trade workers left their jobs because they wanted better wages, shorter work weeks, and the right to collectively bargain through unions.

On June 21st of that year, a streetcar was overturned

The strike committee gave delivery vans and wagons signs so people could still get their milk and bread.

The bank ran out of money so everyone pulled out of their stocks. Thousands of people lost their savings. Only 5-10% of people invested in stocks but when the market crashed everyone faced the consequences.

-Led by J.S. Wordsworth
-Party made up of mostly farmers, labourers, intellectuals, and discontented liberals
-Rejected both Capitalism and revolution communism
-Blamed the depression on the capitalist system
-They announced a new political platform called the "Regina manifesto". This platform proposed public ownership of public places.
-CCF also campaigned for minimum wage and social insurance.

Regina Riot
When the leaders arrived in Ottawa the PM refused their demands and called them troublemakers.
The leaders wanted to continue the trek but bennett didn't want them to.
On july 1st the trekkers had a meeting to raise money to continue the trek
Bennett ordered the leaders to be arrested and everyone else to be removed causing a riot
Conclusion - Trekkers went back home. relief camps shut down within the year and unemployment continued
