Outline what Gibson meant by ‘affordances’
Objects within our environment afford certain physical properties that we, without previous experience, can directly perceive the use of.
Describe what Gibson meant by ‘sufficient information for direct perception’
Everything we can see in the optic array gives us all the information we need to perceive depth, distance and movement
Describe the monocular depth cue of ‘linear perspective allows us to see depth’
Parallel lines appear to converge the further out you look, much like looking at a train track whilst standing on it
Describe how the binocular depth cue of convergence allows us to see depth
The brain interprets signals from the muscles controlling the eyes, giving us an understanding of how far away an object is. When closer, eye muscles contract to allow eyes to converge so we can focus, when farther away, muscles are more relaxed as each eye looks more forward
Outline what Gregory meant by ‘inference’
we reach a conclusion based on the incomplete information around us and our previous experiences of what we should be perceiving
