• provoked by distrust between rural laborer’s

• peasant laborers resented sheep tax and saw it as the govt being unfair to local farmers

• somerset appoints lord Russell to deal with the rebellion

• rebels besieged exter but were defeated by Russell’s troops in aug 1549 - revolt suppressed

• led by Robert Kett who captured Norwich

• motivated by: hatred of local govt, resentment of enclosure and local frustration about the maladministration of the Howards

Response to ketts rebellion

• Somerset was forced to send an army led by John Dudley (Warwick)

• Rebellion was brutally suppressed

• Kett hanged

Wyatt’s Rebellion Mary I

• 1553-54

• reaction to Mary’s marriage to Philip II of Spain

• 4 risings: Devon, Hertfordshire, Leicestershire and Kent

• Only serious rising in Kent

• Sir Thomas Wyatt raised a force of 3000 men

• tried to march to London but were repelled and forced to surrender

what did Wyatt’s rebellion demonstrate?

• Although failed, showed hostility to Spanish marriage

• Showed Protestant religious opinions couldn’t be ignored

• Resulted in execution of LJG and imprisonment of Elizabeth in the tower of London
