Photosynthesis
The process by which green plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose.
Light Reactions
Reactions that occur in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts, converting light energy into ATP and NADPH and splitting water molecules, releasing oxygen as a byproduct.
Calvin Cycle
Also known as light-independent reactions, it takes place in the stroma of chloroplasts and uses ATP and NADPH to convert CO2 into glucose.
Importance of Photosynthesis
Provides energy for plants, is the foundation for the food chain, and releases oxygen necessary for most life on Earth.
Overall Photosynthesis Equation
The overall process can be summarized by the chemical reactions that encompass light reactions and the Calvin Cycle.
