The Crusades
A long series of wars between Christians and Muslims in Southwest Asia.
Palestine
The region in Southwest Asia that was fought over during the Crusades.
The Holy Land
Europeans called Palestine this because it was the region where Jesus had lived, preached, and died.
Seljuk Turks
The group that ruled the Holy Land in the late 1000s and were said to have attacked Christian pilgrims.
Byzantine Emperor
The emperor who asked Pope Urban II for help against the Seljuk Turks.
Pope Urban II
The Pope who called on Christians to fight against the Turks.
People’s Crusade
The initial crusade by peasants who left Europe for the Holy Land in 1096.

The year the noble/knight crusaders reached and took Jerusalem.
Crusader Kingdoms
Kingdoms set up in the Holy Land by the Europeans after they took Jerusalem.
Second Crusade
The Crusade where French and German kings set off in 1147 to retake land from the Muslims, but were defeated.
Third Crusade
The Crusade that began after the Muslims retook Jerusalem in 1189.
King Richard I
The King of England who stayed in the Holy Land during the Third Crusade.
Saladin
The leader of the Muslim forces and King Richard I's main opponent during the Third Crusade.
Fourth Crusade
The Crusade where French knights, running out of money, conquered Zara and attacked Constantinople.
Zara
City conquered by French knights during the fourth crusade.
