Began with Declaration of Independence in 1776

Ended with Treaty of Paris in 1783

War of 1812

1812-1815
Conflict between the United States and Great Britain, largely over maritime rights, impressment of American sailors, and trade restrictions.

Britain backed off in the end

1815 after it ended era of good feelings- one political party

Panic of 1819

Bank inconsistencies, ended with gold standard, and fed gov in charge of money

Mexican-American War

1846-1848

U.S. Annexes Texas 1845

Ends in 1848 With the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo -US gained lots of land from Mexico.

Indian Removal Act: Forces Native Americans off their land.

Trail of Tears: Native Americans forced off their lands- Many died while being forced further west

Compromise of 1850- California and New Mexico both free states, but must tighten fugitive slave laws. let people go get their escaped slaves. Let slaveowners claim free people were slaves and claim them as slaves.

Bleeding Kansas- A lot of Violence over slavery issues, involving free-soilers and pro-slavery factions.

Civil War

1861-1865

Conflict primarily over slavery and states' rights

1862: Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln declares all slaves free in the confederacy- doesn’t have power over Confederate states.

40 Acres and A Mule promised to freed slaves

1865: Lincoln shot and dies, Confederate states surrender.

Spanish American War

1898

U.S.S. Maine Explodes, Spain supposedly at fault

(“Remember the Maine” to Help with Spain”)

Ended with The treaty of Paris giving U.S. control of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, and established a U.S. protectorate over Cuba

Philippine American War

1899-1902

Philippine revolutionaries fought U.S. led by Emilio Aguinaldo. Ended with his capture, Philippines Annexed.

WWI

1914-1919

We joined in 1915 after The Sinking of the Lusitania: killed 128 Americans The Zimmerman Telegram

Ended in 1919 with The Treaty of Versailles

Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria

League of Nations Wilson wanted but congress didn’t. Moral diplomacy.

Great Depression

1929- Stock market crash

1939- ended Great Depression with the start of WWII

WWII

1939-1945

Began with Germany's invasion of Poland (Neutral). U.S. entered after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941 by Japanese.

Allied powers: Britain, US, Soviet Union Vs. Axis powers: Germany, Japan, Italy

D-Day: June 6, 1944, Allied invasion of Normandy. Germany had France, We took back France, pushing Germany back.

V.E. Day: Germany Surrendered, Japan still fighting

V.J. Day: Japan's surrender, marking the official end of WWII.

Korean War

1950-1953

Conflict between North and South Korea. The U.S. supported the South against the communist North, which was backed by China and the Soviet Union. The war ended in an armistice, establishing the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

Nixon- Realpolitik- Stop investing in stopping communism only do whats good for U.S. Economy

Vietnam war

1964-1971

becomes involved in 1964 when the Gulf of Tonkin was attacked (US military advisors base attacked in Vietnam)

Marshall plan- Give money to countries to rebuild from WWII because healthy economies don’t become communist

Where the Marshall plan didnt work The CIA was founded to put rulers in place who would agree, Iran, Guatemala, Cuba
