Forced Migration
When migrants are forced to move. (e.g., war, politics, environmental obstacles, etc.)
Transnational
When migrants move from one country to another country. (Voluntary)
Transhumance
When farmers move their livestock to the Highlands in the summer/lowlands in the winter. (Voluntary)
Internal
Moving within a country/region/state. (Voluntary)
Chain
A series of migrations within a group that begins with one person who pulls others. (Voluntary)
Step
Migration to a far destination that takes multiple “stops” in smaller places. (Voluntary)
Guest Worker
A legal immigrant that moves to a country for work, usually for a short time period; temporary. (Voluntary)
Rural-To-Urban
The most typical kind of migrations, when migrants move from rural areas to urban areas due to economy and jobs. (Voluntary)
Refugee
Someone who is forced to leave their country because of persecution or violence. (Forced)
Internally Displaced Persons (IDP)
Someone who has to leave their home but doesn’t leave the country. (Forced)
Asylum Seekers
A migrant that leaves their country and apply for asylum (the right to be recognized as a refugee and receive protection and material assistance). (Forced)
Enslaved Persons
People that are forcibly captured and exploited for service and are usually moved from one country to another. (e.g., Africans captured and brought to America). (Forced)
Emigrant
Someone who moves OUT of an area. (“E” is for “exit”).
Immigrant
Someone who moves INTO an area. (“I” is for “in”).
Remittance
The money that is sent from a person in a country to their family/friends in another country.

Laws to restrict immigration due to xenophobia.
Xenophobia
The belief/concern that foreigners are negatively impacting the country.
Guest Worker Policies
Policies that regulate the amount of foreign workers who can enter each country and for a specified amount of time.
Family Reunification Policies
Policies that allow migrants to sponsor family members to move into the country.
