acculturation
When people move to another culture, and they begin to adopt the norms and behaviours of the majority culture.
assimilation
When people move to another culture, and they abandon their original culture and adopt the cultural behaviours and values of the new culture.
integration
When people move to another culture and there is an interest in adopting the behaviours and values of the new culture while still maintaining the old culture.
separation
When migrants maintain their own culture and minimize contact with the new culture they have moved into.
marginalization
When migrants cannot maintain their original culture due to being excluded and discriminated.
acculturative stress (culture shock)
The psychological distress that can come from the process of acculturation.
acculturation gaps
An aspect of acculturation, wherein there are generational differences in acculturation and how this leads to conflict within a family.
