Creams

are semisolid preparation that contain one or more medicinal agents that are dissolved or dispersed in either an oil-in-water emulsion or in another type of water-washable base

They easier to spread and remove than ointment

Oil-in-water (O/W)

This type of cream tend to vanish on the skin (vanishing cream)

Water-in-oil (W/O)

This type of cream impart an oily feeling on the skin.

Examples of W/O

1. Melt the spermaceti and white wax with mineral oil using a steam bath

2. In another container, dissolve the sodium borate in water

3. Add the sodium borate and the solution to the melted wax, stirring rapidly and continuously until a viscous white cream is formed

4. Pour the cream into the cream

5. Allow it to congeal

6. Cover the cold cream with a piece of circular glassine paper
