What is infrared spectroscopy used for
an analytical technique used to identify functional groups within organic molecules.
What is the limitation of this technique
Only identifies functional groups but not the number of it present in the molecule
How does it work
Covalent bonds absorb specific amounts of energy in the form of infrared radiation.
By measuring the wavelength of energy absorbed by the molecule, the types of bonds present can be determined.
What is the fingerprint region
The area on the spectrum below 1500cm–1 which is unique to each molecule, It is not used as it is too complicated to analyse
IR and Global warming
