Dystocia
A term used to describe a difficult labor.
Hypertonic Labor Dysfunction
Characterized by frequent, cramplike contractions that are poorly coordinated, painful but non-productive.
Cephalo Pelvic Disproportion (CPD)
A condition where the baby's head is too large to pass through the mother's pelvis.
Complications of prolonged labor
May include maternal exhaustion, excessive pain, uterine rupture, and fetal distress.
Hypotonic Labor Dysfunction
Contractions are too weak to be effective during active labor.
Shoulder Dystocia
An emergency situation where a fetus's shoulders are trapped in the maternal pelvis after the head has delivered.
Tocolytic drugs
Medications used to decrease uterine contractions.
Premature Rupture of Membranes (PROM)
The rupture of membranes before the onset of labor.
Fetal macrosomia
A condition where the baby weighs more than 4,000 grams at birth.
Dystocia due to fetal presentation
Can occur with abnormal fetal positions such as breech or face presentation.
