Speaker

Purpose

Audience
The intended group of readers or listeners
Context
The time, place, and circumstances in which the text was created
Exigence
The situation or problem that prompts the speaker to write
Choices
The rhetorical moves the author makes (Structure, diction, etc.)
Appeals
Strategies of credibility, emotion, and logic
Tone
The speaker’s attitude towards the subject or audience
Genre
The category or form of the text (speech, editorial, etc.)
Rhetorical Analysis
Examining how an author uses rhetorical strategies to achieve purpose
Synthesis Essay
Using multiple sources to support a cohesive argument
Argument Essay
Taking a position and defending it with reasoning and evidence
Prompt
The task or question that initiates the essay response
Thesis
A central argument or claim
