Geography
The study of the Earth’s landscapes, people, places, and environments.
Physical Geography
A branch of Geography that studies natural phenomena where no human existence is involved.
Human Geography
A branch of Geography focused on people and their activities.
Environmental Geography
A branch of Geography that examines how people can harm or protect the environment.
Map
A representation of an area that shows geographical features and landmarks.
Compass
A tool that indicates direction: north, south, east, and west.
Longitude
The distance east or west of the prime meridian, used to locate places on Earth.
Latitude
The distance north or south of the equator, used to locate places on Earth.
Oxbow Lake
A U-shaped body of water formed when a meander is cut off from the river.
Meander
A big bend in a river, usually found in the middle course of a river.
Erosion
The wearing away and moving of bits of rock and soil.
Transpiration
The process by which water is absorbed by plants and released as water vapor.
Evaporation
The process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas.
Thalweg
The line of fastest-flowing water in a river.
Slip-off slope
A slope on the inside of a meander where the river deposits sand and mud.
River Cliff
A steep slope on the outside of a meander where the river erodes the riverbank.
