Inclined Plane
A simple machine that helps move an object to a higher level. The distance the object moves along the inclined plane is greater than the height it is raised. It decreases the amount of force needed to lift an object.
Screw
A special kind of inclined plane wrapped around a pole, used to lift things or hold them together; examples include swivel chairs and jar lids.
Mechanical Advantage
Mechanisms that use forces and make work easier to perform.
Wedge
A v-shaped object used to split an object apart, functioning in one direction. It moves a long distance into the object to create a small gap.
Lever
A simple mechanical system that helps us lift, push, or pull objects more easily, enabling us to move a large load with a small effort. Effort is applied to the bar/lever arm, which then moves around the fulcrum.
Fulcrum
The point around which a lever rotates.
