Simple Machines Vocabulary
Mechanical Systems and Simple Machines
Inclined Plane
- An inclined plane is also known as a ramp.
- It facilitates moving an object to a higher level.
- The distance traversed along the inclined plane exceeds the height to which the object is raised.
- A longer inclined plane reduces the force required to lift an object.
- Function: Decreases the force needed to lift an object.
Screw
- A screw is essentially an inclined plane wrapped around a pole.
- Uses: Lifting objects or fastening them together.
- Examples:
- Swivel chairs
- Jar lids
- Screws
Wedge
- A wedge is a V-shaped object used to split objects apart.
- It functions in one direction only.
- When splitting an object, the wedge moves a long distance into the object, creating a small gap.
- Requires minimal work or force.
Levers
- A lever is a simple mechanical system aiding in lifting, pushing, or pulling objects more easily.
- Facilitates moving a large load with a small effort.
- Effort is applied to the lever arm, which moves around the fulcrum.
Mechanical Advantage
- Mechanisms utilize forces to make work easier.
- Mechanical advantage (MA) is how much easier a mechanisms makes work.
