Spear or Sibat
A thin, long, straight metal blade with a barb, thrown by hand at the target fish.
Snare or Silo
A hand-manipulated fishing instrument made of a running knot or noose tied to a tip of a pole.
Scoop or Bitay
A fishing instrument made of bamboo slot webbings in an oval, half-coved shape, with or without a handle. Fish are captured by dipping.
Cover Pot or Talakeb
A cylindrical device made of bamboo splits with two openings, a small one on top and a wider one at the bottom, operated by hand.
Harpoon or Panibat
A pointed instrument with barbed blades detachable from the handle and either thrown by hand or discharged from a gun.
Handline
A fishing device made of a bamboo pole with a baited-barb hook, dropped into the water to wait for a fish to bite.
Barricades or Saplad
An enclosure in a natural fish area made with materials like stones, mud, weeds, banana stalks, wooden trunks, etc., to prevent fish from escaping.
Fish Corral or Baklad
A barrier constructed with bamboo or chicken wire, set along the natural path of fish.
Filter Net or Saplad
A conical bag net made of sinamay or cotton netting fixed in flowing water.
Hoop Net
A funnel-like net bag constructed over circular hoops.
Lift Net or Salambao
A square or rectangular net manipulated in rivers by persons from four bamboo posts.
Cast Net
A cone-shaped cotton netting with load weight around the base and a retrieving line, cast in waist-deep water to capture fish.
Otter Trawl
A conical net with mouths flanked by wings, kept open by doors, and trawled on water to catch fish.
Gill Net or Paanod
A curtain-like net composed of one or more rectangular nets made of fine nylon or cotton twine, used to capture fish by entangling their gills.
