How is the life of st benedict written by gregory the great simiar to the life of antony?
Btoh are vitaes, and they are similar at the beggining in telling their early early life, however, St. benedicts book is episodic, and Antonys is not.
What does vitae mean?
it means “of life“ or “life“ so it means its going to be about the life of a particular person.
Do the event happen in the same order as they appear in the book?
no, we are not sure exactly what order they actually happened in, but the way they are presented to us, or the specific order if was givin to us is important. It matters because it being in this order gives us more then it would have been in another order. Pourposefull order.
WHy is the life of st benedict written differently then other vitaes?
its written as a conversation rather then just a stry being told. It includes us in the conversation, because often the questions asked by the people in the text ask our questions we have about the story.
Conversation in latin means what?
it means to turn with someone twards a 3rd thing.(the thing you are speaking about)
What does Dialogue mean?
It means access word. It means wo1rd sharede accross a tbale also means “through work“(greek)1 which also means shared word becomes word through which that is more important. whatever the fuck that means.
what was Gregory’s goal in the life of St Benedict?
to teach the Christians how to talk about saints??? idk this shit.
Gregory’s work life of St Benedict was the 2nd of four dialoges. What makes benedicts work different then the rest?
the others aint vitaes.
book1: 12 italian saints
book 2: IS THE LIFE OF ST BEN
book 3: abt 37 saints
book 4: 22 saints and some randome strage topics
what was the point of his works?
the point was to show the people that god is still at work. That he is preseant and still affecting lives. Even though everything is terrible, he is still here, and he loves us now as he did then.
Gregory barrowed what from the confessions of augustin?
each saints life becomes a new gospel of jesus christ. The story of jesus christ is almost reacnacted in the text.
What does it mean to say that “the text is not flat“?
The text we are reading has several layers. They are:
literal meaning- describes the actual events in the life of benedict
moral meaning- How the life of christains are called to live like benedict and like christ. (We should too try and reenact the life of christ with our lives)
anagogical meaning- describes the life of christ or scripture as a whole matches the individual evemts in the life of benedict, and how we should pray
this work is supposed to have an impact, even tho it might seem like “good for them. they aint like me. so idc“ the impact is…
to inspire and to show people how to pray
sometimes there seems to be randome details in the story, that we otherwise woulds think unimportant. Why are these details inlcuded then?
They may seem unimportant for the literal story, but it can have importance for the moral and the allegorical story. For example, the Text in one of the first miracles is of a vessel or sive to clean grain. And it broke. Why is it soo important that we know what exactly it was? Because the thing she broke is used to grow grain. that means she not only broke something for cleaning the grain, but it ruins there ability to grow grain in the future. its really really bad…

Cus he aint jesus.) the water means sprinkleing of water in the chruch and the bell part of the story
moral- Baptism motief- meaning born anew, it was the first story, so means the beggining of things. the rinsing and washing idea of the grain is a hint twards baptism.

allegorical: bird idicates supernatural tempation, affliction of lus. the thorns indicate jesus being courned. its also the first part of the gloria
moral: get over lust, concor it.
is the rolling in the thorns self harm?
no because you are not doing the harm to hurt yourself, your doing it for the greater good. Its the same concept as using an alarm to wake yourself up, running or going to the gym. running through thorns trying to escape from a bear. an act of psiritual chemotherapy.
there is a grave disese and infection (lust) but there needs to be a proper response to the problem(for example, i have a hangnial imma cut my arm off is not a propper response.) and lastly, it needs to be effective.
.
how was lust viewed in the early church?
you need to concor lust first before you do anything else. If you cant concor you will, never be able to fallow god.
should we roll in a thorn of bushes today?
no. we should not. because today we have other ways to distract oursle.f what would he have had? he was all by himself and alone. he had to.

allegorical- peter walking on water, moses strikes rock and water comes out, another biblical story where a tool was accidentally thrown into water and amagically retrieved.
moral- what are these miricals about? leadership. benedict leads ppl and he needs to lead them well, essentally, gregory is saying”what does a good leader have in mind”
Leadership: in order, which way should a person be taken care of?
first spiritual needs, then physical needs then emtoional needs
The participation of others in the miricels
while benedict is the agent through god works, others participate in miricels in their own ways.
why did he beat the monk if every other time he just rays?
he didnt actually beat the monk hard, he just slapped his face as to slap the devil, he gave the devil a blow through hitting the monk
Why did he wait for others to see the black boy/figure?
bevcause then he looks like he is just going around hitting monks.
why did he make placid go uup and pray with him? its wird he made a 10 yr old go with him
lettingothers participate in prayer and miricels is a good thing.

how does the Floretian cycle explain Leadership: in order, which way should a person be taken care of?
the exact oppostie, where indead of it being 1. spiritual, 2, physical, and 3. emotional its the opposite which lead to death instead of spiritual life with the propper order.
