Biology
The scientific study of life.
Scientific Method
The process that generates scientific knowledge.
Hypothesis
possible answers to the question that must be testable and falsified
Theory
A big idea that has been tested multiple times and supported by evidence.
Observation
A testable question that is specific & measurable.
Prediction
Based off the hypothesis, has a format of if then.
Falsifiable
Being able to be disproven.
Variable
Factors in an experiment that can change.
Control group
Part of the experiment that stays consistent.
Eight properties of life
Organized cells: a cell is the smallest unit of life & most are unicellular
Response to stimuli: With the environment around them
maintain homeostasis: Action required for life occurs when the environment is perfect(h2o,ph)
adaptation: Increases the reproductive potential of an organism
evolution: Naturally adapting to their environment and different species
energy: Living organisms use energy & consume nutrition to perform functions
growth: happens during cell division & develop allowing organisms to age & reproduce
reproduce: can be sexual or asexual
Adaptation
The reproductive potential of an organism
Homeostasis
Needs a constant environment such as pH, water, etc.
Metabolism
All cell reactions that provide the body with energy.
Atom
The smallest unit of matter.
Molecule
Composed of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Macromolecules
Large complex molecules essential for life.
Organelles
Specialized structures formed by a combination of macromolecules.
Cell
The smallest unit of life.
Prokaryotes
Very small living things that have no nucleus, simple organisms.
Eukaryotes
Living things made up of cells that have a nucleus, more complex organisms.
Tissues
Groups of similar cells working together to perform a specific function.
Organs
Structures composed of multiple tissues that work together to carry out specific functions.
Organ System
Groups of organs that collaborate to perform complete biological functions.
Organism
Complete individual composed of interacting organ systems.
Adaptation
Increases the reproductive potential of an organism.
Response to stimuli
Ability of organisms to respond to the environment around them.
Growth
Occurs during cell division and development, allowing organisms to age and reproduce.
Reproduce
Can be sexual or asexual.
