Prematurity
A condition where a live-born infant is born before the end of week 37 of gestation.
Small for Gestational Age (SGA)
An infant whose birth weight is below the 10th percentile on an intrauterine growth curve for that age.
Intussusception
The invagination (telescoping) of a section of the intestine into the distal bowel, causing bowel obstruction.
Hirschsprung's Disease
A congenital condition characterized by the absence of nerve ganglion cells in the intestinal wall, leading to severe constipation.
Kernicterus
A condition caused by excessive bilirubin levels leading to brain damage.
Esophageal Atresia
A condition where the esophagus does not develop a continuous passage from the throat to the stomach.
Spina Bifida
A congenital defect in which the spine does not close completely around the spinal cord.
Hydrocephalus
An abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the ventricles of the brain, leading to increased intracranial pressure.
Meningitis
An infection of the cerebral meninges that occurs most often in children under 24 months.
Febrile Seizures
Seizures associated with a high fever, generally occurring in children aged 5 months to 5 years.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
The sudden and unexplained death of an infant, often during sleep.
Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)
A condition commonly affecting premature infants due to insufficient surfactant production.
