Gliomas

Tumors arising from glial cells.

Glioblastoma

A type of glioma arising from glial cells; specific type not specified in notes.

Astrocytoma

A type of glioma arising from astrocytes.

Ependymoma

A type of glioma arising from ependymal cells from the ventricles.

Oligodendrocytoma

A type of glioma arising from oligodendrocytes.

Meningioma

Tumor arising from cells of the meninges.

Neurinoma

Tumor arising from Schwann cells or cells of connective tissue covering cranial nerves.

Angioma

Tumor arising from cells of blood vessels.

Pinealoma

Tumor arising from cells of the pineal gland.

PrPSc

Infected prion; the sequence of amino acids of normal prion protein (PrPc) and infectious prion (PrPSc) are identical, but have different effects.

PrPc

Normal prion protein; the sequence of amino acids of normal prion protein (PrPc) and infectious prion (PrPSc) are identical, but have different effects.

Caspase

A “Killer enzyme” that plays role in apoptosis, or programmed cell death – acumulation of misfolded, abnormal proteins signals for apoptosis and production of capases.

Apoptosis

Accumulation of misfolded, abnormal proteins signals for apoptosis and production of caspases.

Misfolded Proteins

Functions of proteins determined by three-dimensional shapes (way the protein is folded).
