Nucleus
The control center of the cell that directs all of its activities.
Nuclear Envelope
A membrane that surrounds the nucleus and protects it.
Pores
Openings in the nuclear envelope that allow materials to pass in and out of the nucleus.
Chromatin
Thin strands within the nucleus that contain genetic material and instructions for cell functions.
Nucleolus
A small structure in the nucleus where ribosomes are made.
Mitochondria
Rod-shaped organelles known as the 'powerhouses' of the cell that convert food energy into usable energy.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
A maze of passageways in the cytoplasm that carries proteins and other materials throughout the cell.
Ribosomes
Small, grainlike bodies where proteins are produced; found attached to the endoplasmic reticulum or floating in the cytoplasm.
