Diffusion
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Osmosis
The movement of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration.
Active Transport
The movement of molecules across a membrane that requires energy, usually against the concentration gradient.
Passive Transport
The movement of molecules across a membrane without the use of energy, often along the concentration gradient.
Dynamic Equilibrium
A state in which the concentration of a substance remains constant throughout a system when the rates of diffusion into and out of that system are equal.
Semi-permeable membrane
A barrier that allows certain molecules or ions to pass through while blocking others.
Exocytosis
The process by which a cell expels materials in vesicles, allowing those materials to exit.
Facilitated Diffusion
A process by which substances cross membranes with the assistance of special proteins.
