Herbert Hoover (p. 736)
The President of the United States from 1929 to 1932. He was a republican who ran on a campaign of prohibition and prosperity. The early years of his presidency brought about a great deal of prosperity for the United States. Many people blamed him for the stock market crash.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (p. 739)
32nd President of the United States (1933-1945) and a central figure in world events during the mid-20th century, leading the United States during a time of worldwide economic crisis and world war.
Father Charles Coughlin (p. 747)
A Catholic priest from Michigan whose anti-New Deal harangues in the 1930’s became so anti-Semetic, fascist, and demagogic that he was silenced by his superiors.
Huey Long (p. 747)
Nickname “Kingfish”; Senator of Louisiana. He pushed his “Share Our Wealth” program, which would make “Every Man a King,”; planned to run against FDR in the 1936 elections, but he was assassinated.
Frances Perkins (p. 754)
The U.S. Secretary of Labor from 1933 to 1945 and the first woman ever appointed to the cabinet. As a loyal supporter of her friend Franklin D. Roosevelt, she helped pull the labor movement into the New Deal coalition.
Eleanor Roosevelt (p. 754)
FDR's Wife and New Deal supporter. Was a great supporter of civil rights and opposed the Jim Crow laws. She also worked for birth control and better conditions for working women.
Mary McLeod Bethune (p. 755)
A leader in the struggle for women's and black equality. She founded a school for black students that eventually became Bethune-Cookman University. She also served as an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
John Collier (p. 756)
A sociologist and writer, was an American social reformer and Native American advocate. He served as Commissioner for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the President Franklin D. Roosevelt administration, from 1933 to 1945.
