1

additions

shaping the material by adding additional pieces to them either using the same material or a different one

2

MIG welding

arc welding process. electric arc used to create heat which melts the joint area. wire electrode also melts the arc to fill the gap between the two pieces being joined. the operator swirls the welding gun as they move it over the joint to form a continuous bead of weld

New cards
3

TIG welding

electric arc welding but electrode is made from tungsten and doesn’t melt in the process. separate filler rod is use and a gas shield or argon of helium is used to protect the weld area from oxidation. process allows for greater control by operator and more accurate and stronger welds

New cards
4

oxy acetylene welding

welding process used to weld low carbon steel where arc welding processes are not available. mixture of oxygen and acetylene to form an intense flame that can burn at temps of around 3500c

New cards
5

brazing

process carried out using oxy-acetylene gas and compressed air brazing hearth. used lower temp than welding so can be used to join thinner gauge low carbon steel tube or bar. results in joint not being as strong but ideal for general fabrication. uses filler rod made from brass

New cards
6

soldering

similar to brazing but only used for lightweight applications and thin gauge metals. commonly used for joining precious metals e.g. gold or silver. low melting point alloy is melted and applied to metal parts to be joined and this bonds to the melt parts forming a connection when the solder solidifies

New cards
7

riveting

process where holes are drilled into the two metal sheets, metal fasteners are hammered in or a machine presses them through. this process is more expensive than welding as it uses more material and creates weaker joints. but quick and cheap

New cards
8

pop riveting

mandrel is placed into a hole and then the rivet is placed inside. the rivet gun pulls on the rivets deforming the mandrel and securing the rivet. v effective for thin materials/ only one side. more expensive than welding but rel cheap and strong. v hard to remove once secured.
