Integumentary system

The organ system that includes the skin and its structures, serving as a protective barrier.

Skeletal system

The organ system that consists of bones, cartilage, and ligaments which support and protect the body.

Muscular system

The organ system that enables movement through the contraction of muscles.

Respiratory system

The organ system responsible for gas exchange, taking in oxygen and expelling carbon dioxide.

Cardiovascular system

The organ system that circulates blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients.

Lymphatic system

The organ system involved in the body's immune response and fluid regulation.

Endocrine system

The organ system that produces hormones to regulate bodily functions.

Digestive system

The organ system responsible for breaking down food into nutrients for absorption.

Nervous system

The organ system that coordinates bodily activities by transmitting signals between different parts of the body.

Urinary system

The organ system that removes waste products from the body and regulates water and electrolytes.

Male & Female reproductive system

The organ systems involved in producing gametes and facilitating reproduction.

Homeostasis

The process by which the internal environment of the body remains stable despite external changes.

Negative feedback

A homeostatic control mechanism that counteracts a stimulus to return to a set point.

Positive feedback

A homeostatic control mechanism that enhances the original stimulus.

Body planes

Imaginary lines that divide the body into sections for anatomical reference.

Dorsal cavity

The body cavity that protects the nervous system, including the cranial and vertebral cavities.

Ventral cavity

The body cavity that houses the internal organs (viscera), including the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities.

Thorough cavity

The ventral cavity subdivided into pleural cavities, mediastinum, and pericardial cavity.

Abdominopelvic cavity

A subdivision of the ventral cavity that includes the abdominal and pelvic cavities.

Regional Terms: Axial

The torso (head, neck, and trunk) part of Anatomy.

Regional Terms: Appendicular

The limbs or appendages of the body.

Serous fluid

Liquid that separates the parietal and visceral membranes in the body cavities.
