Iroquois Confederacy
This was an alliance between 5 tribes in the Northeast. They had hunting/fishing/farming/gathering in the matrimonial system. They played a role in how defending America between French and British supremacy.
Matrilineal System
Inheritance traced through a group's female members and children are part of their mothers kinship group
Colombian Exchange
The exchange of diseases, ideas, food, crops, from the old world to new and vice versa. Changes everything living on Earth. Starts slavery and causes more population in the old world.
Bartholome de las casas
Spanish philosopher that went to Americas. Saw that the Native Americans were people just like him (Not racist). Did not like the way most Spaniards were treating the Natives or the ideal that they were barbarians (Supulveda)
Juan Gines de Supulveda
Spanish philosopher opposite of Casas. Did not go to teh new world or interacted with any Natives. Creates a reacist view of Natives like they were savages adn barbarians. Wanted to use them for resourced like gold forced labor.
New England Colonies
The New England Colonies were the most North colonies including New Hampshire, Mass (Now Maine), Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Established by Puritans hoping to make a religious puritan utopia separate from everyone else.
Middle Colonies
Middle of North and South Colonies which included, NJ, NY, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Middle Colonies were more tolerant and diverse. They had rich soil created food and a more dense population.
Southern Colonies
Also known as the Chesapeake colonies consists of Virginia, Maryland, NC, SC, and Georgia. Warm weather, plantations (John Rolfe), wealth from crops (Joint Stock Companies (Jamestown).
Encomienda System
The Spanish way of forcing Natives to work for them brutally to find gold and other valuables. When more than 90% of the Native population dies they Spanish turn to slavery. This system eventually leads up to Pueblo's Revolt.
Jamestown
The first lasting English settlement. Joint Stock company to New world and they did not have land (usually 2nd or 3rd children not given inheritances), but want land. Many will not work resulting in many deaths. Powhatan kill any remaining after their starvation. The British however keep sending people to Jamestown.
John Rolfe
First person to cultivate tobacco in the New World. He also marry's Pocahontas creating an alliance with quiakros. As tobacco production increases the price decreases. After many years the influx of tobacco makes its value essentially worthless.
John Winthrop
An Early puritan leader in Mass. he created an established religion in New England colonies. His ideas were overrun by the idea of separation of church and state.
Puritans
English protestants that wanted elimination of all catholic practices. Some separatists took the mayflower in a joint stock company to New England Colonies to start a utopia known as the separatists.
Joint Stock Company
When many people contribute to one cause in this case getting going to the New World to get wealth in form of land, gold, and crops.
Pueblo Revolt
After years of treating the Natives terribly the Natives retaliate and attack the Spanish in this revolt. They kill all the Spanish in sight. The Spanish after this treat teh Natives with more respect and give them more accommodations
Mercantilism
an economic system to increase a nation's wealth by government regulation of all of the nation's commercial interests. In the colonies, it meant getting more gold and regulate the money spent to other countries. Centralized wealth
King Philips War
A coalition of Native tribes in response to British settlement. This war was provoked by alcohol, unfair deals of land, and different standards of justice for Natives compared to the British.
Anne Hutchinson
Banished from New England puritan society for teaching against teh church leadership that it was not focused enough on faith. Goes to Rhode Island along with Roger Williams living with the Natives.
Roger Williams
Banished for questioning the seizing of Native lands and state-focused religion. Laws enforcing religion rather than laws enforcing saftey.
Quakers
A religious group deriving from the puritans that disagreed with the Puritan society in New England. They moved to Rhode Island to seeking to live by the true puritan religion.
Powhattan Confederacy
To eliminate incessant intertribal warfare. To create a powerful force of tribes and safeguard existing Powhatan territory and defend against invasion.Protect tribes from each other an outside invaders like colonists and settlers.
Geography of Chesapeake
Sourounded by rivers, fertile soil (easy food production), Brackish water.
Geography of New England
Rocky soil, harsh winter, dense forest, short growing season.
